Aquatic life in the Amazon basin

The Amazon basin, because of its size and tropical location, holds one of the most diverse aquatic faunas in the world. There are probably about 3500 fish species within the region and almost countless invertebrate species that are associated with or live in water. On this website we can only introduce this wonderful fauna and flora and the many extraordinary adaptations to aquatic life. For a far more detailed study of the flora and fauna see our companion CD 'Fish of the Amazon and Their Habitat'.
